Brandon police are reminding people that scams are still making the rounds, and they should be cautious when asked for money.
The most-recent warning involves the so-called grandparent scam, which typically involves the victim receiving a phone call from someone pretending to be a family member or a friend.
The scammer claims to have been in an accident, or to be in some kind of trouble, and to need money right away. The request is almost always for the victim to send money using a wire service.
However, the fraudster has no real relation to the victim and once the money is sent, it cannot be recovered.
Police say that you should never send money to anyone unless you are absolutely certain that you know where the funds are going and who is receiving them.
