City police are leading by example when it comes to using winter tires.
Brandon Police Service Sgt. Kevin Loewen said the force uses them on all of its vehicles. It makes sense, given the terrain in winter.
“From a safety perspective, it seems like the obvious decision,” Loewen said.
The Winnipeg Free Press recently asked RCMP and the Winnipeg Police Service about their policy. The RCMP said they aren’t required to equip their emergency vehicles with winter tires, but it’s highly recommended. The choice is up to each detachment, and a spokeswoman said the majority in Manitoba do switch to winter tires at the first snowfall.
Winnipeg police said they use tires designed for law enforcement and high-speed emergency use in winter conditions, but didn’t specify whether it uses winter tires.
