Police yet to ID body found on riverback

A man’s body was found on the bank of the Assiniboine River on the outskirts of Brandon Saturday.

Shortly after 6 p.m., police were called to the CP Rail bridge — more commonly know as Cram’s Crossing — after a body was discovered.

“We were called by someone who was walking down by the riverbank and saw the body,” acting Brandon Police Service Staff Sgt. Earl McNutt said.

Although the body is believed to be that of a man who went missing in April, city police are investigating the matter.

“We assume with a body found in an unusual circumstance that it is a suspicious death and work backwards from there,” McNutt said.

On April 21, an older man walked out to the cement ledge at the dam near Dinsdale Park, sat down and pushed himself forward into the water. The man was seen by witnesses trying to swim in the river before being pulled under by the current.

Brandon police and fire and emergency services searched downstream for several days following the incident, but searches came up empty handed.

Since the April incident, a family has contacted police regarding a missing person that matches the description of the man who is believed to have drown, McNutt said.

“There is an individual that has been reported missing and we have been in contact with family members all the way along, keeping them appraised of the situation,” McNutt said. “(The family) has been advised that we have found a body, but nothing can be done until we can confirm who the individual is.”

The body has been transported to the Health Science Centre in Winnipeg for an autopsy. Results are expected early this week.
