Brandon residents are shivering with anticipation for “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
The movie, which will be shown at the Evans Theatre Saturday at 10 p.m., is sponsored by the Brandon Pride Committee. It is just one of many events aimed at bringing more awareness and creating more outlets for the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgendered community in Brandon.
“We’re trying to do more activities and events in the community throughout the year, as opposed to other years where we just did the Pride Weekend,” said Ken Jackson, events co-ordinator for Brandon Pride. “The Pride Weekend is obviously very important to us, but there is a real need for some of these events and we’re trying to assist and give the community some more resources throughout the year.”
The movie, which was released in 1977, is based on a musical of the same name, and it blends music and theatrics throughout that really encourage audience members to join in the show. It has also established one of the largest international cult followings and for those people who have never seen the movie, Jackson said they are in for a real treat.
“It was awesome last year,” Jackson said about hosting the movie that had everyone out of their seat dancing. “Everyone really got into the whole spirit of it and all the traditions and singing along and getting involved in the ‘Time Warp,’ so it was a lot of fun.”
Jackson is also proud of the progress that has been made by the LGBT community within the city, referencing the fact Brandon high schools have established Gay-Straight Alliances. The student-led organizations provide a supportive environment for the LGBT community, focusing on similarities, while at the same time celebrating differences.
He has also seen a difference in attitude toward the LGBT community, from society, and Brandon as a whole in the last number of years.
“The community as a whole is becoming much more accepting, and it’s important for young people to get support and have a place where they can feel like they can be themselves,” he said.
Admission to the show is $6 and Rocky Horror survival kits will also be sold at the door for an additional $4.
