The Provincial Exhibition of Manitoba has welcomed five new directors to its board, which CEO Karen Oliver expects will breathe new life into the organization.
“When you’ve got an organization that’s over 100 years old, the key to keeping it alive and well is to have new blood and a youth perspective, and some of these people will definitely bring it,” Oliver said.
New directors elected include Greg Crisanti, Carla Grills, Andrew Prankie, Keith Atkinson and Derek Gilbert.
“It was really exciting to get all these new people and so many young people,” Oliver said. “It certainly says something about interest in the organization and means that there’s going to be new energy and new perspectives.”
The Provincial Ex held its annual shareholders meeting Tuesday night, which featured reports from all event chairs and a presentation of the audited financial statements. An estimated 60 people were in attendance.
“We had a successful financial year,” Oliver said. The Provincial Ex recorded an operating surplus of approximately $50,000 in 2012.
In addition to the Royal Manitoba Winter Fair, the Manitoba Summer Fair and the Manitoba Livestock Expo, the Provincial Ex puts on other events throughout the year to generate more revenue.
“The fairs in and of themselves no longer really sustain themselves,” Oliver said. “So it’s important that we do other activities and events outside of the fairs to sort of generate enough revenue to keep them healthy.”
Some of those events include a fall schooling show and the President’s Dinner.
Progress continues to be made on the restoration of Display Building No. 2. The exterior of the building is expected to be complete by March.
“We expect to have the exterior complete in time for the Summer Fair this year and we’ll be doing a rededication of the building … on its 100th anniversary,” Oliver said.
As for the interior restoration, Oliver said they expect construction will take just over a year to complete.
The 2012 Figol Award for Volunteerism was presented to Terry Klassen, who has played a major role in the Provincial Ex’s activities for nearly 20 years. Klassen is the former chair of the Winter Fair.
