Acclaimed artist, educator and curator/writer Colleen Cutschall is winding down her career at Brandon University, and a celebratory reception on Thursday will close her exhibition “Thresh Hold.”
Originally from Pine Ridge, S.D., Cutschall has taught art and art history at BU for more than 27 years. The exhibition at the Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art takes place on the eve of her retirement.
Themes presented in this solo mixed media exhibition include mythological archetypes reflecting Lakota spiritual doctrine, human engagement with the cosmos, and the implications of exploration.
“Thresh Hold” provides a snapshot of Cutschall’s past and present arts practice while celebrating her academic achievements and contributions to BU. She holds a bachelor of fine arts degree from Barat College in Lake Forest, Ill., and a masters in education from Black Hills University in Spearfish, S.D.
Her mediums comprise of painting, photography, installation and sculpture and her work has been exhibited nationally and internationally.
Cutschall’s solo exhibitions include: “... Dies Again” (Urban Shaman Gallery and Tommy McCleod Gallery), “Voices in the Blood” (Touring exhibition organized by the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba), “Sisterwolf In Her Moon” (Thunder Bay Art Gallery), and “House Made of Stars” (The Winnipeg Art Gallery), while she has participated in group exhibitions in San Francisco and Portland, Ore., among others.
She has had important public sculpture commissions, including Spirit Warriors, (Aboriginal Memorial, Little Bighorn National Monument, Montana) and Raven (2010 Olympics, Vancouver). She has also curated art exhibitions for Brandon University, the Art Gallery of Southwestern Manitoba, Gallery One One One, and National Museum of the American Indian.
Cutschall has given numerous public guest lectures in Canada, the United States, Italy and Australia, and has participated in residencies at the Winnipeg Art Gallery, Oregon State University and Bellagio, Italy.
She has won both teaching and community service awards, including the BU President’s Medal for excellence in teaching, research and community service, and the YWCA Women of Distinction Award.
She presently sits on the Works of Art Committee and the Inuit Art Centre Task Force for the Winnipeg Art Gallery and artwork can be found in both private and public collections in Canada and the U.S.
Thursday’s closing reception takes place at 7 p.m. The Glen P. Sutherland Gallery of Art is located at 2021 Victoria Ave., just south of the new BU Healthy Living Centre.
