The new Red Cross Personal Disaster Assistance team helped 19 people evacuated from nearby apartments during Saturday night’s massive blaze that destroyed the House Restaurant on 10th Street.
Police Sgt. Kevin McLean confirmed that two buildings were evacuated because of the fire.
The Red Cross established the team in mid-June to handle small-scale disasters. It provided the evacuees with shelter, food, clothing, hygiene products, colouring books and toys.
Firefighters were called to Chinese restaurant, formally known as Wei Na Restaurant, around 10 p.m. on Saturday. Crews remained on the scene until shortly after the noon hour Sunday.
The remains of the building were demolished Sunday afternoon, and debris continued to be moved from the property on Monday.
The Office of the Fire Commissioner is continuing to investigate the cause of the fire. The cost of damage and whether the restaurant was insured has not been released.
