A possible gang-related message has some residents in southeast corner of the city on edge.
The message, that was written in black spray paint on a garage door on the 1900-Block of Ninth Street, clearly reads: "WARRIORS WANT THOM."
"It’s definitely a little scary," said a resident who lives in the area but wished to remain anonymous.
The most alarming part of the three-word message is the potential author, according to the resident, believing it is the work of the Manitoba Warriors, an aboriginal street gang.
"You hear stories about gangs and you hear about the Warriors and that’s scary," she said. "It’s concerning knowing who the Warriors are and it’s nerve wracking because we have a little one at home."
The Warriors were in the news as recently as last week, when a teen, who identified himself to police as a Manitoba Warriors’ striker, according to the crown attorney, was denied bail on allegations that he was involved in a fight outside of Crocus Plains Regional Secondary School. The teen is also accused of a random, violent gang-related robbery.
While the school is just blocks away from the residence that was spray painted, the graffiti is the first sign of mischief the resident has seen since moving to the neighbourhood this year.
"We’ve never had any problems since we’ve moved here and it seems like a good neighbourhood," she said. "I don’t think Brandon has a gang problem and it isn’t as bad as it is in Winnipeg, Thompson or The Pas. I think they have it a lot worse than we do. It is in Brandon, but we don’t see a lot of gangs."
A car load of students, who showed up to take a photo of the graffiti during the lunch hour, confirmed that a "Thom" lived at the house, but also dispelled the notion the message was gang related.
"I think I know who did it," one of the students said. "And he’s not in a gang."
According to Brandon Police Service Const. Ron Burgess no report had been filed with police regarding the spray paint as of 2:30 p.m. on Friday.
"It’s basically just paint on a garage, so without knowing the artist or the details there isn’t much that can be said about it," Burgess said.
