Ready for some traffic snarls? Two of Brandon’s busiest thoroughfares will be closed for repairs this summer — but thankfully, not at the same time.
The CN rail crossings on both 18th Street and First Street will be torn up and repaired in August, requiring the streets to be closed for several days.
Eighteenth Street, just south of Park Avenue, will be closed on Sunday, Aug. 5, and Monday, Aug. 6, two days of the long weekend.
First Street, near Van Horne Avenue, will be closed from Sunday, Aug. 11 until Wednesday, Aug. 15.
Route detours haven’t yet been completely figured out, a city spokesperson said, but will be extensively publicized when they are.
There’s no way to do the work in sections — each site requires the complete removal and replacement of timbers, rubber and the rails themselves, which have to be done in full 140-foot sections.
