Brandon’s CIBC Run for the Cure is coming up quickly, and the event is still in need of volunteers.
The 11th annual run will be held on Sept. 30.
"We’ve got our core committee and then we’ve got about 25 additional volunteers that have signed up on the website … but we’re looking for at least 25 to 50 more," said Brandon run director Colleen Moman, adding she is optimistic that the places will be filled.
"I’m thinking it’s going to come together," Moman said. "Brandon is one of those towns that is of course renowned for their great volunteer base and we’re hoping that we’re going to have another 25 to 50 people come on out."
CIBC Run for the Cure is a national fundraiser for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation. Last year, Canadians raised more than $30 million. The fundraising efforts and volunteer support of more than 170,000 annual participants allows the foundation to continue funding groundbreaking research, education, awareness and advocacy initiatives.
The 2011 Run for the Cure in Brandon raised nearly $110,000, and drew 750 participants.
"That was actually down a little bit from the last three years, so this year we’re hoping to jump back up and get closer to the $125,000 range," Moman said.
The event will take place outside near Assiniboine Community College’s Victoria Avenue East campus.
"We’re switching over to the main lawn in front of the building that faces Victoria, moving over to that green space, which makes it a really beautiful site to work from," Moman said.
Participants can choose the one-kilometre or five-kilometre route, and they can walk or run.
"We’re going to have some added entertainment along the route, which is going down Victoria and then right up 17th Street East," Moman said.
There will be booths set up with food, information and souvenirs.
The Wall of Hope is a place for participants to attach the name of the person they are running for. The Survivor’s Tent will be back as well, where there will be things like massages and manicures offered.
"The survivor’s area is a place where we have a few special things for those cancer survivors that come out on run day," Moman said.
Moman said the event is a special time for those involved.
"It becomes a real bonding experience for the people who are affected by breast cancer, and there certainly isn’t too many of us around that can say we’re not affected by it in our circle of friends and family," she said. "It’s really important for raising money and for bringing those people together."
