RCMP took to the skies with a radio-controlled, camera-equipped, miniature helicopter to survey the crim scene of Virden’s recent downtown fire which consumed the Tru Hardware and four-plex beside it.

Traffic flow was re-routed during the areal investigation and the chopper had to abide by a flight plan, which included a 175-foot ceiling, due to the proximity to the municipal airport.

Minnedosa Tribune

The Minnedosa Grain Growing Project used a convoy of five combines to harvest 90 acres of canola in support of the Canadian Food Grains Bank.

A total of 1,200 bushels were collected, bringing in $28,600. The money will be matched four-to-one and split between 13 church-based groups working to end global hunger.

Gwen’s Trends clothing store has a new home in the Killarney Shoppers Mall.

“It’s a larger space than where I came from, and we have a bigger display area,” owner Gwen Tripp said.

Tripp, who has a new line of autumn wear ready for sale, expects to host a grand opening sometime early in the new year.

The Boissevain Arena is getting an upgrade.

A new condenser was added to the ice plant in August, replacing its predecessor that dated back to 1972.

The new equipment will allow ice to be made when temperatures are warmer outside, meaning ice could be ready earlier in the fall and last longer into the spring.

The Souris and Glenwood Chamber of Commerce is hosting the 21st annual Scarecrow Days September 28th to 30th.

The theme for 2012 is the Wild, Wild West and scarecrow builders have already began working on their masterpieces.

The newly amalgamated Kindergarten to Grade 12 Reston School held an official grand opening September 19th.

“This project serves the community with long term viability,” RM of Pipestone Reeve Ross Tycoles said. “A project that I was very happy to see happen — one that will ensure keeping a school in our community.”

Neepawa’s Bradley Kyle ran away with the game MVP award as a member of the Westman Wolverines.

The Wolverine running back ran the ball eight times for a whopping 203 yard and two touchdowns, helping the Westman team to a 58-10 win over the Interlake Thunder in the Manitoba Major Football League.

“He has had good runs this year, but we were waiting for him to have that breakout game and that happened this weekend,” said Wolverine head coach Dave Stantial about Kyle.

Dauphin Herald

First reading has been given to establish new water and sewer rates in the City of Dauphin.

It has been almost a decade since the city has increase the rates and administration approached the Public Utilities Board for a rate increase.

If approved the new rates will be effective Jan. 1, 2013 and water rates per cubic metre will be 1.83 and sewer rates will be $0.48 per cubic metre. The city has a six-year plan that will see the total rate increase an average of eight cents each year.

Dauphin Herald

John Murray Friday was sentenced to two years less a day for a vicious attack on Const. Jason Herbert of the Roblin RCMP detachment in the spring.

The 29-year-old Friday pleaded guilty to assault of a police officer, attempting to disarm a police officer causing bodily harm, house break and enter, and mischief.

Crown Attorney Janice Barkley read from a report to review the incidents which noted that Herbert was choked by Friday until he almost lost consciousness, and that Friday squeezed the officer’s genitals and bit him hard enough to break skin.

The Carberry Medical Clinic welcomed Dr. Fariba Forouzandeh as the newest physician on staff.

Forouzandeh is from Iran where she accepted into medial school immediately after high school. Besides completing the seven-year medical program, which includes internship, she has done a three-year residency in pediatrics.

Kyra Lavoie has been selected to the national tap dance team, which will travel to Germany in December where Canada will dance for gold at the world championships.

“I hope to do well with Team Canada ... It’s like our Olympics in the dance world,” the 13-year-old Lavoie said.

Lavoie spends five days a week in Brandon honing here dance skills at Steppin’ Time Dance studio and is always practicing in the basement studio built by her father WO Marc Lavoie in Sprucewoods.

Melita New Era

Work is well underway on the #9 fairway and green at the Melita Golf Course. Two bulldozers pushed down the hole in August in order to build a new, larger elevated green and raised fairway.

The estimated cost of the project is $40,000 and to date, $8,500 in government grants have been raised.
