The Barb Kostesky rink from Rossburn captured the Birtle Ladies’ Bonspiel which wrapped up on March 3.
Kostesky and her team of third Courtney Kostesky, second Mildred Strank and lead Debbie Kurchaba defeated Shirley Barteaux of Birtle in the final of the 10-team bonspiel.

Ward Cutler auctioned off two baseball caps for “Caps for Cody,” as part of a fundraiser at the final Virden Oil Capitals home game for Cody Cameron, a young boy with neuroblastoma.
The two hats were bout and resold four times, raising $6,950 for Cody’s fund. In total, the fundraiser brought in about $18,000.

McAuley’s Stacy Lowes is a hockey coach’s dream.
“Stacy, as a person (and a) player is what ever coach put on his Christmas wish list,” said Tri-Town Thunder coach Randy Cuthill, where Lowes is a defenceman for the team in the Prairie Junior Hockey League. “He has great character, is a natural born leader on (and) off the ice and just a gem to coach.”

The Blarney Stone Pub and Restaurant has officially opened its doors in Killarney.
“It’s been a 10 month project to get it here, and now it’s here — I’m happy,” said owner Rick Pauls. “We are the first people in the province to expand a Chicken Delight franchise and include a pub ... And our kitchen and restaurant are huge. We can seat 200 people and we can prepare 420 meals per hour.”

March 1 marked the 50th year that Wayne Pringle has owned and operated Pringle’s Mens’ Wear in Boissevain.
In 1963, brothers Del and Wayne Pringle purchased the business from Jimmy Welch.
“We worked very hard ourselves. It wasn’t a lucrative thing at first. But I think Del and I, playing hockey, we knew people and eventually it built up. The business just kept growing and growing.”

The Minnedosa Bombers bantam hockey team captured the provincial championship in Treherne last month.
The title is the first provincial title for a bantam hockey team in Minnedosa and the first banner since the peewee team won in 2005-06.

Motorists near Gladstone were greeted with an unfamiliar sight on Feb. 28 after a driver missed a turn and the combine he was transporting fell off the back of his trailer.
The combine lay in a tangled mess in a field on its side after flipping. The driver was charged with careless driving.

Natalie Sluis, provincial gymnast with the Brandon Eagles gymnastics team, captured third place at the Magical Classic International competition in Orlando, Florida.
The Grade 7 Carberry Collegiate student competed in the vault, uneven bars, beam and floor.

A dangerous situation involving students on a bus in the Mountain School Division was averted after some quick reactions from a teacher.
En route from Winnipegosis to Gilbert Plains, the bus driver succumbed to a medical issue and lost consciousness while the bus was in motion.
A teacher on the bus was able to steer the vehicle off the highway, ending in the ditch on Highway 20, south of Fork River.

Baldur’s Gord Dearsley and team members Henry Rempel of Killarney, Linda Yablonski, Dana Clark and coach Victor Lavich of Carberry are off to Charlottetown, PEI to compete in the National 5-Pin Boling Championships in April.
The team finished second at the Manitoba 220 Championships held in Brandon on Feb. 23.

The Melita atom hockey team captured the provincial banner in Russell recently.
Melita beat Brandon 6-1 in the final.
“They were like a bunch of pitbulls on chains,” coach Brian Mosset said. “All Brian and I had to do was unleash them and let them go. That’s how badly they wanted to win.”
