Crossroads This Week

Three municipalities will hold by-elections in the coming weeks.

Voters in the Municipality of Shoal Lake will go to the polls on March 19 to choose between Ken Charney and Ryan Knight for councillor.

In Rossburn, the resignation of Elizabeth Melnyk triggered plenty of interest with no less than four people filing nomination papers — Brian Currie, Manley Mackedenski, Don Neighbour and Tricia Shaefer will seek election.

The RM of Silver Creek also has a vacancy after Alwyn Derkatch resigned after serving his ward for 18 years.

Crossroads This Week

Melville Wabash was elected Chief of the Waywayseecappo First Nation last month.

Wabash had been acting chief since the resignation of Chief Murray Clearsky, who resigned after being elected as the Grand Chief of the Southern Chiefs Organization.

Five councillors were also elected: incumbents Wallace Clearsky, Timothy Cloud and Anthony Longclaws with newcomers Barbara Cameron and Lloyd Mecas.

Reston Recorder

“Lions and tigers and bears, oh my.”

The Reston Figure Skating club took to the ice for the Reston Ice Show on Feb. 24. This year’s theme was The Wizard of Oz.

RM of Pipestone Reeve Ross Tycoles received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal recently.

Tycoles was nominated by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities to honour his contributions to local government.

The Corner Pocket

The Relay For Life “Hope Floats” team from Deloraine has been going strong for 10 years.

Lori Main remembers getting the idea to start the team after seeing a brochure at the International Peace Gardens about Relay For Life, “as a cancer survivor, (I thought) it would be great to make up a team of friends that helped me through my journey with cancer.”

Shilo Stag

Despite winter conditions, Capt. Steve Sloat managed to finish his second Actif Epica Ultramarathon.

“I beat my time from last year, despite a more difficult race due to conditions,” Sloat said. “I ended up pushing my bike for about 13 kilometres (of the 130-kilometre endurance ride) total.”

The 4th annual Lake of the Prairies Ice Fishing Derby attracted almost 700 fishermen.

Roger Geres of Langenburg pulled the winning fish from the lake, an 87.5 centimetre jackfish. The win comes with a cool $10,000 first prize.

Jardy Wish of Portage La Prairie took second ($5,000), Dauphin’s Stan Burdenuik took third ($2,000), Russell’s Cassie Derkach captured the raffle choice prize and Shilo’s Tricia Harpe won the early bird draw ($1,000)

Russell Banner

Police received a report of a group of drunken men causing a disturbance at the Russell Inn after they were caught making a video of their Spiderman impressions as they attempted to scale and jump the walls of the administration centre on the east end of the building.

Damage was sustained to the building and drunken super villains were asked to find a new lair.

Roblin Review

Roblin will no longer add fluoride to its municipal drinking water system.

Council acted on the results of a mail-in survey where 65 per cent of the 128 surveys returned in favour of the discontinuing the use of fluoride.

Boissevain Recorder

Westman will be well represented at the Canadian Seniors Curling Championship in P.E.I. this year.

Team lead Joan Robertson is from Minto, second Lori Manning is from Pilot Mound, third Gwen Wolley is from Minto and skip Lois Fowler is from Brandon.

“I think because we’ve been (to Nationals) before our expectations are high,” Wooley said. “We’ve done a lot of curling and are in good shape. We are going there to win.”

Jill Hazlewood is the team’s fifth and Brian Moffat is their coach.

Minnedosa Tribune

Tom Roche and Jason Galbraith continue to train with the Meraloma Rugby Club in B.C. in the hopes of earning a spot on the Under-20 National Team, which will be competing in Chile in May.

“It’s not a cakewalk,” Roche said. “You have to do your fitness, you have to do your gym and get to rugby training five times a week. It’s a pretty difficult thing, but it’s fun. We love it, that’s why we do it.”

Virden Empire-Advance

Virden’s Brandi Pollock has enjoyed life on and off the ice in her third year at Pittsburgh’s Robert Morris University.

The 5-foot-6 blue liner has a goal and four assists in 28 games.

“The best part of playing for RMU is being able to represent my university on the ice as well as in the classroom,” she said.

Killarney Guide

Randy and Mr. Lahey, two characters from the famed Canadian television show ‘Trailer Park Boys,’ will be in Killarney at the Erin Inn tonight at 8 p.m.

The Gazette

Bob Conibear, Earl Malyon, Dennis Schram and Bob Jewsbury were all awarded Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medals.

All three play a prominent role in local government in their communities.

“I was surprised and humbled,” Schram said.
