The Collins family, from Pilot Mound, recently presented the idea of an elite hockey academy in the community.
The enterprise would see about 20 student-athletes from across the United States and Canada live in Pilot Mound, attend the local school and be enrolled in an elite hockey program.

Desi Ronald Nepinak, 25, has been charged with second degree murder following a stabbing in Ochre River.
On Nov. 5 at about 10:30 p.m., police were called to a residence in Ochre River and upon arrival found a 45-year-old man with stab wounds. The injured man was transported to hospital where he later died.

Two windmills for water aeration have been added to Pelican Lake.
The additional windmills brings the number of aerators on the lake to five — three conventional and two windmill aerators.
The aerators are used to combat winter kill in the lake, adding oxygen so plants and fish in the lake can stay healthy.

Virden residents will cast their ballot for the open councillor position today.
Five people — Al McAuley, Amanda Hayward-Draper, Tina Williams, Frank Van Den Hoek, and Zac Penner — are running for the position.
The group took part in a debate earlier this month.

Casey Bertholet, daughter of Laurie and Adrian Bertholet of Grande Clairiere, has been selected to skate for Team Manitoba’s figure skating squad.
Bertholet, who skates with the Reston Figure Skating Club, was second in the short program and fifth in the long program out of 25 skaters at sectionals.

Standing over the grave of his great grandfather, Shilo soldier Maj. Reg Sharpe shed a few tears as he reflected on what the 22-year-old Charles Sharp endured during the Great War almost a century ago.
“It was an emotional experience to set foot in any Commonwealth cemetery, but when you have a direct connection to yourself there ... you don’t know what to say,” Sharpe said.

Lil Currie was just 17 years old when she signed up to join the Royal Canadian Air Force.
Currie served with the RCAF Women’s Division for Land and Sea Planes based at Patricia Bay, near Victoria, B.C., for over a year during World War 2.
“The first Christmas away was the worst,” Currie said.

Rich Pope was the finalist in this year’s Wendy’s Kick for a Million contest and although he didn’t capture the top prize, he did split the uprights and win a $25,000 gift certificate from The Source, a Nissan Titan truck, and 42,000 in cash.

Turtle Mountain School Division will hold a public meeting to gain input on the upcoming budget tonight in Boissevain.
“We like to hear from the communities,” TMSD secretary-treasurer Kathy Siatecki said. “About what works in the school division. What can doesn’t work. What can be improved. Then we look at what people want to see from a budget standpoint.”

With an appearance at the Calgary Stampede already under his belt, bareback rider Colin Adams is off to a great start in his rodeo career.
Adams, from Deloraine, has been all across Canada and the United States competing in some of the best rodeos in the world.
“It is very important what you draw,” Adams said about making sure you draw a good horse for the rides. “Most times the horse is proven, so you know what to expect, but they are always a little unpredictable.”

Pierson School held it’s Remembrance Day Service on Nov. 8, dedicating the service to Jim Kennedy, who served with the Canadian Armed Forces during World War 2.
“We gather her today, in honour and respect of the men and women who paid the supreme sacrifice during World War 1, World War 2, the Korean Conflict, in conflicts still ongoing and in peacekeeping effort around the world,” Brian Erixon said.

Manitoba Senior Baseball League president Richard Lochhead says there is an increased urgency to add more teams to the five clubs currently playing in the league.
“We need to get some more teams,” he said. “There seems to be more talk about it now. It might mean we go to another division/league in the province, but we have to do something.”
Lochhead said one possibility was joining the MSBL and Winnipeg Senior Baseball League at some point in the future.
The MSBL has also put in a bid to host the 2014 Baseball Canada Senior Men’s Championship.

Ten years ago on Nov. 7 at about 2 p.m., an eastbound CP train carrying barley derailed just east of the public crossing in Newdale.
About a dozen cars derailed, some slamming through the wall of the Agricore fertilizer building. There was extensive damage to the building, track and cars, but no one was injured in the derailment.
