A drunk driver who had three times the legal limit of alcohol in his system when he hit another vehicle and narrowly missed two others will spend his weekends in jail.
“It’s really quite miraculous that nobody was seriously injured under the circumstances,” Crown attorney Yaso Mathu told Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta in court on Thursday.
Donald Albert Crozier, 56, pleaded guilty to driving with a blood-alcohol over the legal limit.
Mathu said that around 6 p.m. on Oct. 1, Brandon police received a 911 call reporting that a vehicle was swerving on 18th Street North.
The caller said the suspect vehicle had narrowly missed one vehicle at one set of traffic lights before it hit another at the traffic lights at the corner of 18th Street and Hilton Avenue.
The vehicle then continued to 26th Street, where it nearly hit a third vehicle before police caught up and pulled it over into a parking lot on the 2600-block of Victoria Avenue.
Crozier was the driver and appeared highly intoxicated. Tests placed his blood-alcohol level at more than triple the legal limit.
He has a prior drunk driving conviction from March 2002.
Defence lawyer Bob Harrison asked that his client receive a conditional sentence, or that he be allowed to serve any jail sentence on weekends. That would allow Crozier to continue to work full-time.
On his part, Crozier said that he coughed or sneezed and his foot had slipped off the brake when he rolled ahead and hit the other vehicle.
He said he stopped, gathered his paperwork and then intended to speak with the occupants of the other vehicle but it took off.
Hewitt-Michta agreed to Harrison’s request and sentenced Crozier to 30 days in jail to be served on weekends.
When he’s not in jail, he’ll be on probation.
He’s also banned from driving for two years.
