Severe storm delays delivery of Saturday's Brandon Sun

A severe storm that walloped the Red River Valley and Winnipeg — and also dumped some white stuff on Westman — forced the closure of the Trans-Canada Highway late Friday night.

While the Brandon Sun pushed its deadline up 30 minutes to try and win the race with Mother Nature, the old gal won out and our papers sat idle — we’re printed at our sister company, the Winnipeg Free Press — until the roads were safe to travel later Saturday.

By that time, it was too late to get the print edition of the Sun delivered in its regular fashion to subscribers and retailers, in both city and rural areas.

It was the first time since we amalgamated our printing operations with the Free Press in 2010 that delivery was so severely interrupted.

We did what we could, keeping readers — and our advertisers — notified of the situation through brandonsun.com and via our social media accounts.

In an attempt to reach even more readers, Sun sales and marketing director Glen Parker had pre-taped announcements about delivery delays on Friday to air on CKLQ/Star FM on Saturday, as we saw the weather forecast was grim.

As a courtesy, we offered a free online PDF version of the paper as of 7:30 a.m. Saturday, which many people took advantage of and later let us know they appreciated the gesture.

The delivery drivers were at the Sun’s Rosser Avenue warehouse Sunday morning, so retailers and carriers would have received the paper throughout the day. But there was no guarantee carriers would be available for home delivery.

As a result, some subscribers will receive their Saturday Sun with their Monday paper.

We are trying to do our very best to serve readers and advertisers. But sometimes unexpected events throw a monkey wrench into even the best of plans.

Just remember, we want to continue to be “Your Home Page — In Print and Online.”
