Shilo soldiers prepare for Mountain Man event

Soldiers from the 1st Regiment, Royal Canadian Horse Artillery (1RCHA) and 2nd Battalion, Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (2PPCLI) conducted physical fitness training in Ninette from July 30-31.

Nearly 40 soldiers ran along Highway 23 through Ninette along the lake as well as a route through town.

The training consisted of a 12-kilometre run, a gruelling 1.2-kilometre canoe portage, a six-kilometre paddle on Pelican Lake, at the end of which was a final three-kilometre run. The entire race was conducted with a 35-pound backpack.

It was held as part of preparation for the 50-kilometre Mountain Man event to be held in Alberta later this summer.

Top finishers included 2PPCLI soldiers Sgt. Brian Weigelt and Lt. Eric Henderson, who placed first and second, respectively, and Cpl. Alfred Barr from the 1RCHA, in third.
