Tyler Slawinski, 22, of McCreary won Canadian rookie of the year at the Livestock Marketers of Canada auctioneer championship in Edmonton at the beginning of June.

He was the youngest person in the competition, but he found a way to edge out the other seven rookie competitors.

"I started going to auction sales with my dad when I was a kid, and I just sort of picked it up from there," Slawinski said.

Slawinski continues to help out at farm sales, but he prefers to sell livestock.

"You have to know quite a bit about the animals, their breed and what condition they’re in, how old it is. You see those cows from when they’re born, from when they come through the ring and you’re always talking with the producer and trying to help him get the best dollar for his calves."

On his family farm in McCreary, seeding is just wrapping up and the cattle are getting shipped out to pasture, but Slawinski always finds time to practise.

"I practise every day, whether it’s in the tractor, or outside doing whatever, or when I’m driving," Slawinski said.

In July, Slawinski will compete for the International Livestock Auctioneer Rookie of the Year at the Calgary Stampede.

His favourite part of the competitions is spending time with the community of people at the shows.

"You get to go out and meet new people, see new faces, and rub shoulders with the rest of the auctioneers. You get to find out what’s going on all over Canada, and when you get to the international competition you get to find out what’s going on in the livestock industry all over the world."

Slawinski sells at both Gladstone and Ashern auction marts.
