A soldier has been charged with attempted murder in connection with the shooting of another soldier at CFB Shilo on the weekend.
The charge stems from an altercation at the base early Sunday morning.
A source says a soldier was shot twice in the leg shortly before 6 a.m. at his housing unit on Kingston Avenue.
Shortly before the shooting, the victim had punched a man in the face while ejecting him from a party at the home.
The man who was punched then left, but returned and shot his assailant twice in the leg.
Court documents indicate that the weapon is a Remington .45-calibre semi-automatic handgun.
The shooter then walked or ran off but was followed by another man who had been at the party.
The gunman fired another shot before escaping, but the suspect was peacefully arrested nearby within minutes. Police also recovered a gun.
Meanwhile, the shot soldier was taken to Brandon hospital. As of Monday morning, he reportedly remained there, but staff wouldn’t supply an update on his condition.
The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service continues to investigate.
A public affairs officer for that military police unit, Maj. Greg Poehlmann, described the victim’s injuries as non-life-threatening.
Poehlmann said the seized firearm is not a military-issued weapon.
Clarence Joseph Stillman, 40, is charged with two counts of attempted murder and numerous weapon offences.
One attempted murder charge relates to the man who was shot.
The second may have something to do with the shot fired while the gunman was being followed by the second man.
There are no charges to suggest that the handgun had been possessed illegally.
In court on Monday afternoon, defence lawyer Bob Harrison waived Stillman’s appearance.
The case was adjourned to Thursday at the request of Crown attorney Joanne Maynard to allow further investigation.
Stillman’s rank with the military is master corporal, but other specifics of his service aren’t available for now.
