The suspect in the cold case slaying of two Minnedosa residents will be extradited from Michigan to Texas this week to face capital murder charges.
On Nov. 13, 1988, Minnedosa residents Evan and Wilda Squires were shot to death in their Weslaco, Texas, mobile home where they wintered, after they apparently surprised one or more would-be burglars.
Weslaco police failed to make headway with evidence at the time and the investigation had long since stalled. DNA from the scene, however, was entered into an American national registry, which pinged back a hit in December 2011.
Arturo Almaguer, then 41, had been arrested in May 2011 on an unrelated charge in Grand Rapids, Mich., where he remains in custody at the Kent County jail.
In a press release issued yesterday by the Weslaco Police Department, investigators, working together with the Hidalgo County Sherriff’s Office, say Almaguer will be extradited this week to Texas, where he will face charges of capital murder, murder and burglary with intent to commit other felony.
Almaguer, now 42, is expected to be flown down to the Rio Grande Valley and will be taken before a Weslaco judge on Friday at noon for arraignment.
