Students' group leaders ready to make impact

The president of Assiniboine Community College’s Students’ Association hopes to improve events and create more of a presence in the college.

Interactive media arts student Christopher Nicholson was elected last winter for the 2012-2013 school year.

"Overall, it’s been a good experience so far, and just kind of nice to try and make some changes in the school," he said.

Lorra Eastcott is ACCSA’s vice-president of academics, while Desiree Mills is the vice-president of finance.

"This executive council got lucky because we were able to work in the summertime," Nicholson said. "So we could help prep for the school year and all that kind of stuff."

Nicholson said the early start has allowed the executive council to get a handle on what their duties are and build solid relationships before jumping into the job in September.

"So far, we’ve been able to look to other executive councils reports from what didn’t work last year, and we’re basically focusing on fixing those," he said. "Now we already have a concrete relationship between all three of our executives … and it’s great."

Nicholson said one of the goals is to make the association more visible and accessible to students.

"I’m definitely looking forward to making the students’ association more present and make students aware that we actually exist in the college," he said. "Because in the past years, a lot of students don’t even know that they have a students’ association."

Nicholson said he has listened closely to student opinions and hopes to incorporate them into the plans over the next year.

"We’ve been talking to the students and a lot of them say they would rather have a band play at the social event part of Sun of a Beach (beach volleyball tournament)," he said. "There was a great turnout for Rock the Block this year for Brandon University … We’re definitely looking closer into possible bands that we would choose, but ... it’s all up in the air."

Another priority for Nicholson is for the students’ association to build a closer relationship with Brandon University Students’ Union.

ACC held its general council elections Thursday. Those elected are: Shirley Head, cultural co-ordinator; Phillip Bollman, social co-ordinator; Christopher Ridgen, activities co-ordinator; Andrew Humphreys, business rep; Michelle Allison, agribusiness rep; Michael Peters, trades rep; Elle Truijen, health and human services rep; Leisa Melnyk, Manitoba Institute of Culinary Arts rep and Cory Hume, Adult Collegiate rep.
