JUNE 26, 2013 - A vehicle is seen washed off of Highway 83 south of Highway 2 as floodwaters cover the highway. June and July brought a series of powerful storms to Westman. Areas including Pipestone, Reston and Virden received the brunt of the damage. At the end of spending the day on the ground in the area reporter Graeme Bruce and I tracked down a pilot in Virden that was able to take us up for an aerial view of the damage. MAY 9, 2013 - An American White Pelican tosses its prey, a small catfish, into position to be swallowed while fishing the waters of the Souris River with approximately three dozen fellow pelicans on Thursday evening. It's hard to describe what I do as work when i'm sitting on the banks of a river enjoying the warm sun and beautiful evening light. I spent an hour or so photographing the pelicans as they fished in the Souris River. It was an hour well spent.

Tim Smith is nominated in the pictorial category and for the prestigious photojournalist of the year award.

Smith, who joined the Brandon Sun in October 2007, has previously been a finalist in the competition and finished first in three categories.

"I’m excited for Tim, as he works very hard on his craft," Sun managing editor James O’Connor said last night. "This is also an honour for the Brandon Sun, as it shows the level of professionalism we strive for in our photography department and throughout the newsroom."

The Sun will have a more detailed story on Smith’s nominations and information about another honour received this year that will see him travel to New York City for a portfolio evaluation by some of the top editors in the world.

The winners of the News Photographers Association of Canada honours will be announced during the 2013 National Pictures of the Year Awards Gala on May 24 in Vancouver.
