Award-winning scientist, environmentalist and broadcaster David Suzuki will be featured as the keynote speaker at Manitoba Conservation Districts Association annual conference in December.
Throughout the years, this learning and educational experience has grown to become the largest annual conservation conference in Manitoba. The event shares initiatives, challenges and partnerships by those interested in and involved in Manitoba’s watershed planning and water quality initiatives.
This year’s conference, “Thriving with Change,” will be held Dec. 3-4 at the Keystone Centre.
“The timing is perfect,” says Sharla Boychuk, executive director for the association. “At last year’s conference an announcement was made by the minister of Conservation and Water Stewardship to highlight our newest partnership in the Conservation District Program, the City of Brandon.”
As of April 1, Brandon became the newest member to the program and is now the largest urban partner in a program that encompasses 85 per cent of municipal Manitoba.
Until now, the program has primarily been rural-based, expanding the program and including urban centres has been a goal within the conservation districts and the association.
“This year, we wanted to embrace our newest partnership and target an audience within the city of Brandon and its surrounding area” Boychuk said.
“In 2011, the conference reached a record 550-plus attendees. So we are quite confident that with a renowned keynote speaker, we will be able to extend the invitation further and maximize our registration capacity.”
Manitoba Conservation Districts Association provides leadership, education, promotion and advocacy for the 18 conservation districts across Manitoba.
Registration will be available for both full conference registration for the entire event, as well as tickets solely for Suzuki’s keynote address. Tickets to the banquet reception will also be available.
In addition to the keynote address, the conference also features local guest speakers, presentations by selected conservation districts, a youth environmental education event, Conservation District Awards Reception, a banquet and trade show reception.
