Tax arrears list shrinks

More Brandon tax scofflaws are coughing up enough to hold on to their properties.

The city’s latest list of properties that are two years behind on their property tax bills has just 63 addresses left on it — down from about 220 at the start of the year and just under 100 as of two months ago.

The biggest name on the list, though, is still Shape Foods. The beleaguered flaxseed processor owes the city more than $290,000 for its past two years of taxes.

The second-biggest bill is the quick oil change facility located at the corner of 18th Street and Rosser Avenue. The owner of that property is more than $55,000 behind on taxes.

Properties on the list face increasing fines and penalties as the year goes on, with the ultimate fate being a tax auction in October. That is rare, although two properties were auctioned off last year.
