A new community garden will soon be ready for planters in Brandon’s north end.

Brandon University’s SIFE Brandon team (Students in Free Enterprise) is launching its second garden — Green Futures North — officially on May 12.

"It’s going to be designated as an urban farm, so that low-income families can then go to local farmer’s markets and sell their produce, supplementing their income," said SIFE Brandon president Candace Claeys.

The team is preparing the new location at 100 Stickney Ave. today. The new garden will include 85 garden beds built by the team over the past two years.

SIFE Brandon, along with the Samaritan House, has identified 60 families who will benefit most from these gardens.

"The Samaritan House is using another 10 gardens for their own local produce to be given to people at the food bank," Claeys said, adding there are still a few available beds.

The first Green Futures community garden was launched in 2010 and created 45 raised garden beds at the East End Community Centre. Part of the program is a hands-on learning environment with the elementary students of King George School. The original plan was to launch Green Futures North last year, however due to the flood it had to be postponed.

SIFE is an international non-profit business organization, which finds needs in the community and creates projects. Founded in 1975, SIFE has active programs on more than 1,500 college and university campuses in 39 countries.
