Teen charged after stabbing, other violent robberies in Brandon

Brandon police have arrested a suspect after a 70-year-old man was stabbed numerous times in the head and face on the weekend.

An investigation into three separate robberies within a week led police to the same suspect — a 19-year-old man, who was held in custody for his first court appearance Tuesday.

On separate occasions, the suspect is accused of threatening men he met in the west end of Brandon, demanding cash from them. Violence ensued if he did not get what he wanted.

In the most egregious case, the stabbing victim, found just after midnight last Saturday, covered in blood, was transported to hospital and eventually taken by STARS air ambulance to Winnipeg with serious injuries.

The victim was approached while at the recycling bins at 34th Street and Victoria Avenue. A struggle ensued with the suspect, who allegedly demanded the senior’s cash and vehicle, resulting in repeated stabbings.

The suspect fled the area with the victim’s vehicle and wallet. The vehicle was later recovered on Cherry Crescent.

Earlier that same evening, an 81-year-old man claimed three suspects cornered him in his garage on Falcon Crescent. Police responded to the home at 6:51 p.m.

In that case, after a brief struggle, a suspect took cash and keys to the senior’s vehicle. A police dog tracked the suspect to the inside of Shoppers Mall, where he was arrested.

In another incident, on April 12, the 19-year-old suspect, and another man, allegedly approached a 27-year-old man walking on a bike path near Fotheringham Drive at 3:30 a.m. The two men forced the walker to withdraw cash from an ATM.

The victimized man, who was not injured, said one suspect brandished a weapon, which looked to be a screwdriver.

As a result of the attacks, a 19-year-old man faces three counts of robbery with an offensive weapon, one count of robbery, an aggravated assault charge and two counts of fraudulent use of a credit card.

Police are continuing to investigate the other suspects.

Since the arrest, police discovered the suspect is also allegedly responsible for a fourth robbery last week, occurring on April 14 at 12:02 a.m.

The suspect and two other men allegedly forced their way into a residence in the 2600 block of McTavish Avenue. The suspect is accused of assaulting two men in the home and stealing a cellphone and cash before fleeing. He faces charges of robbery with violence and forcible entry.
