Teen pleads guilty to series of crimes

A Westman teen has pleaded guilty to a string of offences including school-related assaults, one of which was video recorded and posted to YouTube.

“Your charges and the circumstances surrounding those charges is upsetting,” Judge John Combs told the girl in Brandon court on Monday.

The girl, and the small community and school where the attacks took place, can’t be named due to the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

In total, the 14-year-old was sentenced for nine offences committed between Jan. 10 and March 6.

On Jan. 9, she posted a message on Facebook that announced she intended to beat up another girl, her 17-year-old schoolmate.

She followed through on that threat the next day at her Westman high school. The victim knelt to gather her books when her attacker hit her in the back of the head twice and once in the face.

Initially, police said that the offender had video recorded the assault and then placed it on YouTube. The girl later told court that it was recorded and posted by someone else.

The girl also assaulted another 13-year-old female student at school on Jan. 30 and punched a 14-year-old boy in the mouth as he walked home from school on Feb. 24.

In each case, the offender claims she was provoked, in two instances by name-calling.

From there, the girl breached her release order — which had a condition that she keep the peace — by spitting on a teacher during a Jan. 14 hockey game at the local rink.

She was also sentenced for breaking into a home on Jan. 26 and stealing sweaters, and to mischief for setting a fire inside a camper trailer on that same date. In addition, she violated her release conditions on Feb. 15, Feb. 29 and March 15.

She entered guilty pleas to the various offences on March 22 and has been out of custody as she awaited sentencing.

On Monday, Combs sentenced the teen to a total of 18 months probation with 60 hours of community service work.

She has to make a written apology to the owners of the camper trailer and the home she burgled, but won’t have to pay for the damage to the trailer as she has no source of income.
