Texas murder trial to begin in January

A man who faces charges in the killing of a Minnedosa couple who were wintering in Texas more than a quarter-century ago will start his trial early in the new year.

The capital murder trial of Arturo Almaguer is scheduled to start on Jan. 22, 2014, according to the Brownsville Herald.

Evan and Wilda Squires were spending the winter of 1988 in Weslaco, Texas. They apparently surprised one or more would-be burglars at their mobile home and were shot to death.

Weslaco police failed to make headway with evidence at the time and the investigation had long since stalled.

DNA from the scene, however, was entered into an American national registry, which pinged back a hit in December 2011.

Almaguer, then 41, had been arrested in May 2011 on an unrelated burglary charge in Grand Rapids, Mich.

It was apparently feces found on a pair of shorts at the Weslaco crime scene that finally led authorities to Almaguer.

The Herald reports that preparation for the trial has been difficult for prosecutors, since many of the key figures involved in the investigation have died or were otherwise unavailable.
