An offender who threatened to kill a police officer and burn down the officer’s home has been jailed for his tirade.
In court on Monday, Judge Shauna Hewitt-Michta rejected the possibility of house arrest and sent the man to jail instead.
She said she needed to send a message.
“The public has an interest in police officers being able to do their jobs unhindered by violence, unhindered by threats of violence,” Hewitt-Michta said.
Ryan David Dubreuil, 30, unleashed a string of threats against a Brandon Police Service officer on Feb. 11 when he was arrested for breach of peace.
On the way to jail, Dubreuil told the officer: “Drop me off … or I will burn your house down,” “You are dead, bro” and “I’ll burn your whole f-----g family.”
When the officer read him his rights, Dubreuil replied, “You pigs can die.” When asked if he wanted to call a lawyer, Dubreuil responded, “F--- you, you’re dead.”
Dubreuil was lodged at the Brandon jail and then later released on a promise to appear in court.
He later claimed he was angry about being “thrown around” by the officer after being found drinking in a vehicle outside a downtown hotel.
On Monday, he also pleaded guilty to breaching his release order by drinking on Sept. 1.
Dubreuil has been in custody since that second arrest and Hewitt-Michta gave him 10 days time served for the breach.
He received another 45 days in jail and 18 months probation for the threats he made to the constable. As part of his sentence, he’ll have to write an apology to the officer.
