Last year’s top honours in the province went to the Threshermen’s Reunion and Stampede in Austin.
“It was really nice to have that support in Manitoba,” said Gloria Sims, president of the Manitoba Agriculture Museum that hosts the event.
The Threshermen’s Reunion and Stampede is on the WestJet “Canada’s Favourite Festival” list again this year, currently sitting fourth in Manitoba and 57th in Canada.
The four-day festival is located roughly 80 kilometres east of Brandon and hosts a vintage parade of equipment and vehicles, the Manitoba Clydesdale Classic and a fan favourite — the corn and barley corral.
“We’re also opening the village — that’s where our museum comes to life,” Sims said. Volunteers and staff dress up to liven up the village and perform demonstrations of old farming techniques.
The farrier competition will continue into its second year with a blind eye event where competitors make a horseshoe without exact measurements. Whoever makes the one most closely fitting the horse wins.
Running from July 26-29, the Threshermen’s event marks the 58th reunion and the 51st rodeo. This year will feature a Versatile Expo, with tractors and farm equipment from Versatile Company of Manitoba. “Big Roy,” a four-axle, 600 horsepower tractor prototype, will be part of the collection.
