Oak Lake choirs the Noteable Women and The Heard sing “The Messiah” by Handel with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra in Winnipeg last December. On Sunday, the two Oak Lake choirs will perform at St. Paul’s United Church in Souris.
SOURIS — The Souris District Arts Council is pleased to present another evening of top-notch entertainment when Noteable Women and The Heard come to St. Paul’s United Church in Souris on Sunday at 7:30 p.m.
These two choirs from Oak Lake are conducted by Karyn Morrow-Penner, founder of the groups, and accompanied by Shelby Rampton.
A love of music and singing is the only criteria required to sing in the choir Noteable Women. Formed in January 2004, the group has sung together for Remembrance Day services, local church services, Christmas gatherings, local and provincial festivals, the Atlantic Band Festival in Halifax, the Cantando Festival in Edmonton and fundraisers for various groups as well as their own spring concerts.
They have also participated in the Singers Helping Singers Concerts in Brandon.
Collaborative efforts have been made with Women of Note in Winnipeg, Prairie Blend men’s choir in Brandon and the University of Manitoba’s Women’s Chorus in Winnipeg.
This choir consists of ladies ages 14 and up, with the majority falling in the middle of the age bracket. The roster has varied from 25 to 52 members.
Noteable Women has received a second place standing in provincial competition, a Gold Standard Award at the Atlantic Band Festival in Halifax in 2009 and two Gold Level standards at ChoralFest Manitoba. This last award has given the choir a bye into national level competitions on two separate occasions.
The Heard men’s choir was born out of a request from the male singers in the community to have a choir exclusively for men.
Formed in January 2009, it is a choir for changed men’s voices of any age. There were 13 members in the inaugural year of the choir and last season it had grown to 23.
The premise of the choir is to spend time enjoying singing, regardless of musical background or experience.
The Heard has performed at Christmas and spring concerts in Virden and Oak Lake, with other Oak Lake choirs joining them, the Noteable Women and the Sandhill Singers. They have also sung at the Virden and Brandon Music Festivals, as well as at ChoralFest in Winnipeg.
Last December, the two choirs were thrilled to be singing "The Messiah" by Handel in Winnipeg with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra.
This season’s performance, with a theme of "home," will include some Christmas music.
