Two men face charges after thefts, armed robbery at local beer vendor

Four people were arrested — and two face charges — after a series of offences on the holiday Monday that culminated in an armed robbery.

Police say they were called to the Keystone Motor Inn in the early evening after a man with a knife had held up the beer vendor.

They say the man, dressed in dark clothing and with his face covered, had entered the vendor armed with a knife, and made off with money and cigarettes.

However, further investigation showed that the same person had apparently come into the vendor twice earlier in the evening, with a partner, and had stolen cases of beer.

No one was injured in the incidents.

After the robbery, police tried to track down the suspects, but weren’t able to find them.

However, sometime after midnight, in the early-morning hours of Tuesday, police say they encountered suspects matching the description — and not far from the scene.

They arrested a total of four people and managed to recover some of the tobacco as well as a knife that was allegedly used in the robbery.

Two of the people arrested are not believed to have been involved in the thefts or the robbery, but were held overnight in the drunk tank. The other two will face a variety of charges.

A 29-year-old Brandon man has been charged with armed robbery, wearing a disguise, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and two counts each of theft under $5,000 and breach of recognizance. Police say he was bound by a court order from previous criminal offences to abide by a curfew and alcohol-related conditions. He was held in custody to appear for a bail hearing Tuesday.

A 23-year-old Brandon man was also charged with two counts of theft under $5,000 in relation to his alleged involvement in the beer thefts prior to the robbery. He has been released from custody, to appear in court in March.

Police say they continue to investigate.
