Bladeworx Barber/Salon barber Jesse Spence trims the facial hair off ACC instructor Chad Bicklmeier during Thursday’s Movember Challenge at the Len Evans Centre for Trades and Technology. Bicklmeier will have to start from square one, having had his moustache for the past 30 years. However, growing it back isn’t a problem and will help raise money for the annual prostate cancer fundraiser and awareness campaign.
Over the next month, don’t be surprised if you see a lot more men channeling Burt Reynolds, Captain Hook and Lars the Viking.

Men in Brandon and around the world will be sprouting moustaches for the "Movember" campaign, supporting prostate cancer and male mental health initiatives.
"Prostate cancer ... guys don’t want to talk about it. Guys don’t want to get checked," said Quentin Derhak, owner of Bladeworx Barber/Salon. "It’s a great campaign … It’s the one time where our wives will let us grow a moustache. They look ridiculous, but let’s do it. It’s the only way you’re going to raise awareness for something like this. It’s fun and it’s a great cause."
Derhak was at Assiniboine Community College Thursday for the kick off of ACC Students’ Association Big Moustache on Campus. He was shaving students, staff and members of the public who are participating in the Movember challenge.
Participants start Nov. 1 with a clean-shaven face, and then for the next 30 days they "groom, trim and wax their way into the annals of fine moustachery."
Kim Martin, instructor at the ACC Adult Collegiate, shaved a full beard and moustache for the cause. It’s a look he hasn’t had since 1977.
"It feels cool and I suppose it’s going to be even worse when I go outside," Martin said. "The big thing will be whether my wife and the dog recognize me."
Mike Lamb of KX96 radio was one of the first to shave off his goatee.
"It really is a good cause, something that is not just a trend, but something I can really get behind," Lamb said. "So I figured it was easy and for a good cause, so why not?"
ACCSA’s campaign is being run as part of Movember and Sons Canada (ca.movember.com).
"It’s a friendly competition at a national level, just to see how much money that we can raise," said Alicia Zurba, ACCSA spokesperson.
The students’ association is teaming up with Houstons for the Big Moustache in Brandon Gala on Nov. 30, where prizes will be given out for the best moustaches. There will be prizes for both ACC students and the general public for the best Burt Reynolds, Lars the Viking and Captain Hook. There are also Miss Movember prizes for faux ‘staches.
The movement originally began in Melbourne, Australia and has since expanded to countries around the world. This year, official campaigns will be held in 21 countries across five continents.
In 2011, over 854,000 Mo Bros and Mo Sistas around the world got on board, raising $125.7 million.
"Through their actions and words, they raise awareness by prompting private and public conversation around the often ignored issue of men’s health," according to Movember.com. "One of the biggest obstacles men tackle in regards to general wellbeing, is a reluctance to discuss the health issues they face with their partner, family, mates or doctor. Movember was born from recognition that a fun and engaging initiative could help encourage men to become more actively involved in their own health."
There are many other local groups and businesses joining the Movember movement, including the Kinsmen Club of Brandon. Ten per cent of sales at Pantages will be donated to the cause. Joe Beeverz Bar and Grill will be donating $1 from every pint of Bucktooth Brew sold and $1 from every Big Beev sandwich sold to Canadian Prostate Cancer through the month of November.
