Westside Plumbing receives apprenticeship award

A Brandon company has won a provincial award for its work in training apprentices.

Westside Plumbing and Heating received an apprenticeship award of distinction on behalf of government, being named employer of the year-rural.

The awards helped kick off Manitoba’s Apprenticeship Recognition Week, the first of its kind in Canada, which is taking place this week until Sunday.

Legislation brought forward by St. Norbert MLA Dave Gaudreau formally recognizes the week’s events.

The activities of the week aim to raise awareness of the apprenticeship system, careers it can offer, and its contribution to the economic success of our province.

“I want to make sure that young Manitobans in particular recognize the nobility and significance of careers in the skilled trades,” said Gaudreau, a former apprentice and welder by trade.

“My own experience led to a rewarding career and an opportunity to contribute to the greater good of our society.”

Over the past year, the government has boosted tax incentives for employers who hire apprentices and provide on-the-job training; committed funding towards the new Skilled Trades and Technology Centre at Red River College; and invested funds to grow apprenticeship including E-apprenticeship development.

Since 1999, the number of active apprentices in Manitoba has doubled.
