High winds and icy conditions left some people in the dark yesterday.
In Brandon, students gathered around candles in some areas of Brandon University’s campus as the school was without power for about two hours in the afternoon.
Backup generators were used to keep the university’s network up and provide essential services within the school.
In total, about 200 customers in the city were affected by the outage, which was caused by high winds and icy lines.
In Carberry, crews worked to repair a broken line that had been snapped due to the ice buildup.
“We had a broken wire on one of the 115,000-volt lines that feeds that station,” Scott Powell of Manitoba Hydro said. “Service went out at about 10:15 this morning.”
Powell said crews were working in various areas of the province to de-ice lines by ice rolling — a procedure that requires crews to hang a roller, attached to a long pole or rope, to a conductor. The roller is then pulled along the line, cracking and removing the ice as it goes.
“There is a couple of inches of hoar frost on the lines and we have to make sure it is off to ensure reliability and public safety,” Powell said.
The outage, which lasted about two hours, affected about 1,760 customers in the area.
Powell said there still could be some sporadic outages throughout the province as crews work to de-ice lines.
