A 57-year-old woman is dead following a farm-related accident in the RM of Shellmouth Thursday afternoon.
Lucille Morrison died after she fell off the tractor she was driving and was subsequently hit by the brush cutter it was towing on her acreage, located northwest of Russell near Lake of the Prairies.
Friend and neighbour Marlene Lyon said Morrison’s husband, Archie, was also in the area and rushed over after he noticed the tractor wasn’t moving because it had become hung up in a group of trees.
A brush cutter uses heavy rotary blades to cut through dense weeds and plants.
Lyon said Archie found his wife of more than 30 years before calling for help.
"It’s sadder than sad and more shocking than shocking," Lyon said, adding that Morrison was very familiar with the machinery she was operating.
"Lucy was quiet, with a heart of gold. She would do anything for anybody if she could. She was such a kind-hearted person."
As evidence of that "do anything for anybody" personality, Lyon said Morrison was mowing a trail that led to a private family burial site on the acreage.
It’s that site where the ashes of her in-laws have been placed for generations.
Morrison was mowing the site because the family was preparing to host a memorial for her brother-in-law, who recently passed away.
Earlier this month, Lyon was walking with Morrison in that very area, which is the tallest hill on their land that overlooks the lake.
"Her and I were out there and I told her it was a beautiful resting place and I said, ‘I guess you’ll be here someday too, Lucy’ and she said ‘Yeah,’" Lyon said. "Two weeks later and this happens and you just don’t imagine such horrid stuff."
Lyon said Lucille loved being outdoors working on the acreage.
In the winter, she was part of the maintenance-janitorial staff at Asessippi Ski Area and Resort.
"She wasn’t a fancy, up-town type of person," Lyon said. "She liked the simple lifestyle."
Prairie Mountain RCMP, with the assistance of Manitoba Workplace Safety and Health, are investigating the incident.
No foul play is suspected.
Morrison leaves behind her husband and the couple’s adult son, Miles.
