Woman faces assault charges after incident at Massey Manor

Bludgeoned on the head with one or more wine bottles, a man laid unconscious for hours before he woke and was able to get help.

Details of a bloody assault at Massey Manor were released on Friday by the Brandon Police Service.

According to Sgt. Guy Roberts, the man claimed he had been unconscious since 9 p.m. on Wednesday, more than five hours before police got the call.

Joy Dawn Phelp, 36, appeared in court Friday facing charges of assault with a weapon and aggravated assault.

Despite the Crown’s opposition to grant release, the Brandon woman was granted bail by Judge John Combs on Friday and has another court appearance on March 14.

Due to a publication ban, details of the incident revealed in court cannot be reported.

The victim, a man in his 50s, was taken to hospital with head injuries. He was reported to be in serious but not life-threatening condition.

One of the tenants shared her experiences with the Sun following the incident.

“I came out of the door and all I could smell was blood,” she said. “It was covered, there was blood all over the floor, all over the walls, going up the walls, all over his door.”

The assault apparently happened sometime overnight. She says she awoke to screaming and, after checking on her son, assumed that it had been a dream and returned to bed without noting the time.

It wasn’t until the next morning that she saw the aftermath of the assault.

“I feel really bad because you don’t think to check the hall,” she said.

Police say they were called at around 3 a.m. Thursday to the assault, but haven’t said when they believe the assault happened. At least seven police vehicles were on scene.
