A woman who got in a fight outside the Brandon courthouse following an emotional trial has found herself facing a judge.
Judge John Combs said violence isn’t acceptable, even when court rulings can bring disappointment for some.
“I know that court cases can be emotional,” Combs noted on Monday as he sentenced 26-year-old Danette Lyn Hanmore of Brandon.
The fight stemmed from a decision delivered in Brandon Court of Queen’s Bench in February.
Two men in their 20s were accused of raping a 16-year-old girl during a house party at or near the Waywayseecappo First Nation in March 2010.
However, on Feb. 17 at the conclusion of their trial, Justice Robert Cummings acquitted the cousins of sexual assault and other charges.
Crown attorney Grant Hughes described how family and friends of both the victim and the two accused had gathered in the courtroom to hear the verdict and tensions were high after Cummings delivered his ruling.
Defence lawyer Ryan Fawcett said that led to a confrontation in the courthouse halls.
A 24-year-old woman who was there to support the accused was “antagonistic” toward the complainant’s family.
That woman and Hanmore, who was there in support of the complainant, then got in a fight outside the courthouse.
Hanmore pulled her adversary’s hair before sheriffs managed to split the women up.
Hanmore went after the woman again but police, who also happened to be at the courthouse, managed to stop her.
Fawcett said there was a third combatant who attacked and injured Hanmore, but it appears Hanmore was the only person charged.
Hanmore, who has no criminal record, pleaded guilty to causing a disturbance and Combs gave her a nine-month conditional discharge.
As part of the order, she’s to stay away from the other woman involved in the courthouse scrap.
