Viewed from satellite images, Riding Mountain National Park is a green island settled amid a grid work of farmland, roads and towns — an oasis largely unmarked by human hands. Within that island, animal residents greatly outnumber human ones. As spring warms the Earth, many of those inhabitants awake from hibernation and search for food. It was at this key time of year that I found myself with a few hours free to search them out with my camera. With a bit of time and a lot more sheer luck, I found a small sample of the rich variety of life that adds glitter to the green jewel just an hour’s drive north of our city.
