Manitoba judge delays sentencing of couple who had 64 dogs seized

WINNIPEG - A Manitoba couple will have to wait a few more weeks to be sentenced for hoarding dozens of dogs.

Peter and Judith Chernecki pleaded guilty last month to a number of Animal Care Act violations at their rural property near Gull Lake in July 2010.

Sixty-four dogs were seized from them and 34 of those had to be euthanized.

The couple's lawyer has asked a judge to impose probation only, but the Crown wants Peter Chernecki to serve four months in jail and his wife to pay fines totalling more than 26-thousand dollars.

The couple was supposed to be sentenced Thursday, but it has been adjourned until Feb. 26.
