Today on the Hill: lawyers for troubled senator Patrick Brazeau appear in court

OTTAWA - Lawyers for suspended senator Patrick Brazeau will be in a Gatineau, Que. courtroom today.

Brazeau, a former member of the Conservative caucus, is facing assault and sexual assault charges in connection with an incident more than a year ago at a home where he was living at the time.

The charges are unrelated to Brazeau's other legal troubles in connection with his expense claims, which led to his expulsion from the upper chamber, along with fellow former Conservatives Mike Duffy and Pamela Wallin.

Brazeau is not expected to be in the courtroom.

Here are some other events in and around Ottawa today:

— The trial of London, Ont., doctor Khurram Syed Sher continues. Sher is on trial on a charge of conspiracy to facilitate terrorism.

— Statistics Canada will release reports today that will indicate the strength of Canada's manufacturing sector and new car sales in December.

— The state of Canada's housing market will also be revealed in the monthly report from the Canadian Real Estate Association.
