Two Winnipeg men guilty of first-degree murder in body in barrel case

WINNIPEG - Two men who killed a young Winnipeg man with a hammer, stuffed his body into a barrel and tossed it into a river have been found guilty of first-degree murder.

Kristopher Brincheski and Corey Tymchyshyn (Tim-chish-in) were sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole for 25 years.

The Crown contends the pair plotted and killed 22-year-old Chad Davis in February 2008 over a large drug debt.

As the verdict was read, Tymchyshen looked straight ahead with little expression and Brincheski put his head in his hands and cried.

During the trial Davis's mother Lori read her victim impact statement, placing some of her son’s ashes in a small urn on the witness stand.

She scolded the two men, asking how a parent is supposed to put into words the horror of finding out her son’s head has been beaten in, his body stuffed in a barrel and thrown in the water.

Lori Davis told the court she is no longer the person she used to be and she has been robbed of her son and any joy in life.

Justice Brenda Keyser of Court of Queen's Bench says the case is an example of the awful toll drugs take on our society. (CJOB)
