Winnipeg Mayor Sam Katz sues University of Winnipeg over student newspaper story

WINNIPEG - Winnipeg's mayor is suing the University of Winnipeg, the publisher of the school's newspaper and a student writer over a column that the mayor says is defamatory.

The column written in the Uniter in December was about a firehall land swap.

It suggests Mayor Sam Katz (KATES) pressured the city's former chief administration officer to do a deal with real-estate company Shindico at any cost.

In a statement of claim recently filed in court, Katz’s lawyer says that is not true.

The lawsuit alleges the column is reckless and deliberately meant to cause harm to the mayor.

Statements of claim contain allegations that have not been proven in court. (CJOB)
