Brandon Sun - ONLINE EDITION
A healthy infographic
Yesterday, former Brandon Sun writer Robson Fletcher posted some stats on Facebook — stats that he had dug up to write an editorial for his new employer.
He had looked at Canada's six biggest provinces, and had collected budget numbers, the amount of each budget that was spent on health care, plus basic health indicators (like life expectancy).
They were just sitting there, like low-hanging fruit, and I said that if he didn't turn them into an infographic I would.
Robson called my bluff.
Now, I've never made an infographic before, but they're the hot new darlings of the graphic design set — so much so that I think they're in backlash mode right now. Or are they cool again, through the magic of nostalgia? I forget.
Anyway, I took his numbers, turned them into some charts and graphs, slapped them against maps of the provinces and the image of a waving flag and voilà, my first infographic.
I manage to cobble it together during some down time over two days at work, but since I learned some stuff about Adobe Illustrator in the process and I'm blogging about it, that counts as my job, right?

Good infographic Grant. It does make it a lot easier to understand the data. My only suggestion is that it would be more useful if you had the Maritime provinces and a total for Canada too. Otherwise we're not really getting the full picture
