And the winner is…

Back in November, after Larry Maguire came out victorious in the byelection battle for MP of Brandon–Souris, I posted a fun poll to the Brandon Sun site asking people what they thought his first official words on the floor of the House of Commons would be.

It was attached to a follow-up story about his election win, and it got a fair number of hits.

I gave what I thought was a comprehensive list of possibilities, but i've learned that I can't foresee everyone's opinion, so I included a "something else" option at the end.

Ha — that one almost ended up winning, and was in solid second place.

The most-popular guess was "Mr. Speaker," which is a safe one.

Here is the full breakdown of results:

Well, that was a couple of months ago, and voting on the poll is long since closed, but I'm revisiting it today because we can finally tell who guessed right.

Monday afternoon, after being sworn in officially, Maguire rose for the first time and — as is traditional for members of the government — lobbed the softest of softball questions at a minister.

He then posted the transcript of his questions on Facebook.

The first words?

Which means 91 per cent of us guessers guessed wrong.

Or … it means Larry saw that we thought he'd zig, and zagged instead.

Rubbing salt in the wound, he followed up his first words with the most-popular guess.

Why, this is starting to look deliberate. Good thing there's no money riding on these polls!
