  • New eatery to open on Park

    Brandon Dairy Queen owners Laird and Tracy Lidster are bringing their love of fresh flavourful food to Brandon this fall. The Lidsters are opening a Qdoba Mexican Grill in a portion of the old Rogers Video Building at 1830 Park Ave. (behind Dairy Queen on 18th Street).
  • Tutti Fruiti offers tasty deals for grand opening

    Tutti Fruiti, located at 839 18th St., has been hopping since it’s opening earlier this year and the new favourite spot of Brandonites is celebrating with a grand opening today. Tutti Fruiti co-owner Cindy Demaer said that the reception she has received from customers has been overwhelming since Tutti Fruiti opened.
  • Applebee's reopens after completing total makeover

    If you are planning on dining out this weekend, you might consider Applebee’s, located at 1204 18th St. After being closed for four days this week, the restaurant reopened after a major overhaul inside and out that saw big changes to the outside look of Applebee’s to the dining and lounge rooms inside.
  • Sturgeon Tire reborn at new Princess location

    After a fire that destroyed the Sturgeon Tire location on Pacific Avenue, Sturgeon Tire has reopened at 1126 Princess Ave. this week, with a new look and a host of new services for its customers. It has been two months since the fire destroyed the original Sturgeon Tire and manager Brad Schwartz said while the company is still sorting through a handful of customer claims from the fire, the new location is now open and offering light mechanical services such as oil changes, wheel alignments and more, as well as tires sales and installations.
  • Silvertip Angler is keyed up for promotion

    Silvertip Angler Promotions and Apparel is quickly becoming the choice for branded apparel and promotional material for some organizations and sports teams in Brandon. The home-based Silvertip Angler Promotion and Apparel is run by owner Barry Mymko, who says his hours are 24-7.
  • Get fit the Crossfit way

    Brandon is getting a new fitness facility and a new way to get healthy. Geoffery and Anna Dumas will open up their crossfit fitness facility, Crossfit Brandon, located at 1229 Richmond Ave., the first or second week of May.
  • Lady of the Lake now sells bottles of popular dressings

    Lady of the Lake Shop, Cafe and Pub has been listening to its customers. Thanks to much feedback from customers, Lady of the Lake is now selling 350ml bottles of two of its famous dressings used on its salads in the cafe. “It’s gone over really well so far,” said Cory Messel, one of Lady of the Lake’s shop managers. “Our customers have eaten this dressing on our salads in the cafe and now they can take it home.”

    After more than two years of renovations and bringing in new products, the Home Hardware Building Centre at 1020 18th St. is ready to celebrate with a grand opening sale next week. Co-owner Trevor Kowalchuk said he and partners purchased the Home Hardware on 18th Street in 2009 and have been working on it ever since.
  • Vern's Appliance adds Green Acres custom cabinetry

    Vern’s Appliance has become a one-stop-shop for those looking to upgrade or replace their kitchen. Vern’s Appliance owner Vern Kalmakoff and his son Adam Myran have recently introduced Green Acres Builders and its custom-made cabinetry to their 238 Princess Ave. shop.
  • New owners plan upgrades for Double Decker Tavern

    The Double Decker Tavern has a set of new owners. Allen Shalwani and Moe Ajami took over ownership of the popular downtown bar and restaurant, located at 903 Rosser Ave., at the beginning of this week from former owner Kim Hooker and her partners.
  • Urban Bliss set to close at end of April

    A favourite spa in Brandon will close its doors at the end of April. Urban Bliss, located at 365 Pacific Ave., owners Tanya Brown and Corynne Hutton have decided to close their business to spend more time with their families and pursue other business options.
  • Serving up tasty treats at Twisters

    I scream, you scream, we all scream for ice cream! It’s that time again when the sun shines a little brighter, the weather is a little warmer and the ice cream shops finally open up again after a long winter. Twisters Ice Cream Shoppe, located at 305 18th St., opened on March 1, and is serving up its much loved twisters — peanut butter cup, strawberry cheesecake, butter pecan score and more. Hours in March are 12 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Twisters owner Mike Houlden said the hours will expand when the weather gets warmer. Houlden said Twisters is looking for staff and potential candidates can submit resumés in-store.
  • New Asian buffet coming to 18th Street North

    Brandon is about to get a great big new Asian buffet-style restaurant. Located at the old Aunt Sara’s location at 201 18th St. North, the restaurant is set to open in June.
  • Bistro/pub gets ready to open

    After years of working in everything from five-star restaurants to pubs, Robyn Whalen is finally going to own her own restaurant. Her restaurant, Foxy’z Bistro and Pub, located in the former Munday’s Restaurant at 302 10th St., is slated to open in the first couple weeks of March.
  • Denture clinic a hands-on affair

    After opening his second clinic this past fall, denturist Kyle Ryan is feeling at home in Brandon. “I have worked in other clinics, I commuted back and forth from Portage la Prairie (for a number of years) and I always wanted to work in Brandon,” Ryan said. Ryan, a denturist who took his training at Northern Alberta Institute of Technology and has been practising since 2003, opened his second denture clinic in Brandon at #4-547 Eighth St. in November. This comes after having success running his first clinic, Carberry Denture Clinic, in Carberry since 2010. Ryan has been practising for close to 10 years, having worked for his father at Ryan Denture Clinic in Portage and Brandon.
  • Yoga studio branching out

    Need to stretch? Relax? Get moving? Be flexible and fit? Look no further than Sacred Tree Yoga. Sacred Tree Yoga, located at 435 Rosser Ave., Unit M, offers a wide variety of classes. Something for everyone, thanks to some recent additions to Sacred Tree’s schedule.
  • Pik-A-Dilly marks 50th anniversary

    Pik-A-Dilly RV Centre, located at 320 Highland Ave. in Brandon, plan to celebrate a very big birthday in a very big way all year long. Pik-A-Dilly is celebrating its 50th anniversary of being a locally owned, family run business and customers are the ones who are going to benefit from the celebrations.
  • Canadian Tire continues to change store experience

    Brandon’s Canadian Tire is going through a major reorganization to make the store even more accessible for local customers. Canadian Tire owner Grant Wallace said the changes are part of a renovation that has been going on for the last six years, in an effort to meet the growing needs of customers.
  • Mall celebrates great year

    Big things are happening for the Shoppers Mall in Brandon. The Shoppers Mall is coming off a good year and more is yet to come thanks in part to a couple of big name franchises that moved into the mall in 2011. Shoppers Mall general manager Kim James said new big name tenants Tim Hortons and The Children’s Place have bolstered the number of customers visiting the shopping centre.
  • Bob's Steakhouse moves into former pizza joint

    Some familiar home cooking has returned to Brandon. Bob and Linda Warden, who were known for their famous homemade burger and fries as past owners of another restaurant in the Wheat City, have just opened up Bob’s Steakhouse and Lounge.
  • Chilli Chutney tops restaurant poll

    The Chilli Chutney’s butter chicken has got Brandonites hooked after less than a year in business. The popular downtown restaurant, which serves authentic East Indian cuisine, has been voted the most popular restaurant in the city by urbanspoon.com, (an international website poll that lets customers do the voting.) Other Brandon eateries rounding out the top five on Urban Spoon include Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Joe Beeverz Bar and Grill, Pizza Express and Marino’s Pizza.
  • Green Acres eatery sold

    Happy New Year! As we ring in 2012 tonight, this month will see a big change for local restaurateurs Meggi Wejda and Peter Lave.
  • Ready to fight for Boxing Day sales

    When it comes to Boxing Day, Dec. 26, there are two schools of thought when it comes to shopping: Go hard or go home. It seems the same applies to local retailers when it comes to competing with the Big Box stores. Independent and locally owned businesses like Senate Skate, (senateskateshop.com); located at 658 18th St. will be open for business and running a “huge sale.” Senate Skate partner Jordan Ross said Boxing Day is usually the day the store starts clearing out its winter merchandise.
