Ten Thousand Villages

It seems this day and age it becomes increasingly difficult to find a gift at Christmas for your loved ones that they need or could use and meanwhile, the need in other parts of the world grows.

Why not give a gift that really does keep on giving? Ten Thousand Villages, located at 829 Rosser Ave., in partnership with the Mennonite Central Committee, is once again offering its "Living Gift" program for those wanting their dollar to truly go further. It’s a chance to give a more meaningful gift, says Ten Thousand Villages manager Lynn Nightingale.

"There are a number of different projects that people can purchase that help those living in Third World countries. The gifts range in price from $20 to $350," Nightingale said.

A $20 gift would buy trees for a community in Haiti or a $350 gift would buy an entire farmyard for a family living in Ethiopia. With each gift, the giver will receive a card explaining the gift which can be passed onto the gift recipient.

Ten Thousand Villages is hosting a demonstration of one of the gifts you can purchase today from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

A volunteer will demonstrate spinning wool, which is a $35 gift you can get that provides training for women in Bangladesh who have been victims of the sex trade.

The $35 gift gives them training in textile and fibre and provides a new source of income for the women.

Crossfit Rocked

If you wanted to get an early start on your new year’s resolution to get fit, now’s your chance.

Crossfit Rocked, located at 345B 10th St., opens today and is giving customers a chance to learn about what this new trend in fitness is all about — for free.

Crossfit Rocked will be running two weeks of free classes starting Monday, Dec. 10.

Brandonite Zack McMillan, who played university hockey, got his taste for Crossfit while working as a personal trainer in Winnipeg.

"I was born and raised in Brandon and Crossfit hasn’t really taken off here like it has in Winnipeg," McMillan said of his decision to open his own gym.

So what is Crossfit? McMillan says Crossfit is a strength and conditioning program that combines constant variations of functional movements at a high intensity.

"It definitely keeps the body on its toes," McMillan said, adding Crossfit is for everybody.

"I’ve been doing Crossfit with my 61-year-old father and he has had great results."

McMillan is hosting two information sessions on Crossfit today and tomorrow at 2 p.m.

McMillan asks that you attend one of the information classes before taking advantage of the two weeks of free Crossfit classes.

Get Nailed

Get Nailed has a new owner.

Debra Smith became the new owner of the nail salon, located at 1700 Pacific Ave., on Dec. 1 and says she is excited about her new venture.

"I just did chair rentals before but the opportunity presented itself and when opportunity knocks, you answer it," Smith said.

Smith spent 25 years as a 911 dispatcher and upon her retirement decided to go to nail school.

Get Nailed still offers the same great services: manicures, pedicures, facials, massage and waxing.

Get Nailed is open Monday, Friday and Saturdays 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursdays 9 a.m. to 8 p.m.

For more information, call 204-751-9225.

Patmore Nursery

Patmore Nursery, located at 1307 18th St. North, will have its free sleigh ride today from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m.

The sleigh ride was originally scheduled for last Saturday as part of Patmore’s open house, but had to be rescheduled due to icy road conditions.
