Let them eat cake … with their coffee that is.

Customers at Forbidden Flavours at 1060 18th St. can have an extra special treat with their usual cup of joe. Courtney’s Cake Creations cupcakes, cake pops and whoopie pies are the newest feature on the menu at Forbidden Flavours on 18th. Forbidden Flavours owner Ryan Jacobson, said he spotted the line-up at Courtney’s Cake Creations stand at the Big Ones Craft show back in the fall and knew he wanted to try them in the coffee shop.

"I wanted to offer something different and unique. All the products are really good and we’ve already sold out of a number of items," Jacobson said, after bringing Courtney’s Cake Creations to Forbidden Flavours at the beginning of this month.

For Courtney Jacobson, chef and owner of Courtney’s Cake Creations, it’s an exciting opportunity for her to expand her business and for customers to sample her wide variety of sweet temptations.

"I think everybody gets so sick of the regular vanilla or chocolate cupcakes. I have flavours like bubble gum for kids, red velvet, pina colada and of course I still do the classics," Courtney Jacobson said.

Ryan Jacobson said Forbidden Flavours on 18th will also be undergoing a major renovation in March. Jacobson said the book area will be eliminated to make more room for seating and the layout in the coffee shop will be changed to make it more user friendly. Jacobson said he hopes Forbidden will only be closed about a week during the renovations in March.

Forbidden Flavours on 18th is open Monday to Friday 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., Saturdays from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sundays and most holidays from 8 a.m. to 11 p.m. For more information, call them at 204-571-6670 or visit Forbidden Flavours on 18th on-line at forbiddenflavours.ca.

Courtney’s Cake Creations not only offers cupcakes, cake pops and whoopie pies, but also does wedding cakes, 3D cakes and many other treats. For more information, call 204-727-2656 or search for Courtney’s Cake Creations on Facebook for great pictures of all her creations!

Silver Saddle Grill

The Silver Saddle Grill in Minto is going to be a bustling restaurant once more. Joanne and John Harburn are the new leasees of the Silver Saddle Grill (owned by the Town of Minto) and plan to open near the beginning of next month.

Joanne, an experienced cook, plans to tantalize restaurant goers with a made-from-scratch menu, including home-made pasta dishes, smoked hickory burgers and fries, meatloaf and a selection of desserts.

The Harburns are currently updating the interior and are on the hunt for staff.

John Harburn owns Harburn Flooring in Carberry, and Joanne Harburn said she decided to open up her own place because of her love of cooking.

"I wanted to try it. I have a real passion for cooking," Harburn said. "I’ve cooked all my life and I’m excited to give this a try."

If you would like to apply for a job at the Silver Saddle Grill in Minto, call Joanne Harburn at 204-761-7714.

The Dock on Princess

The Dock on Princess, located at 1133 Princess Ave., is hoping to bring out the generosity of their customers in time for St. Patrick’s Day.

The Dock general manager Jamie Munro said the restaurant will start its "Give Up the Green," fundraiser for the Brandon Regional Health Centre Foundation, this Tuesday and it will run until March 17. Customers can purchase a four leaf clover for a minimum $1 donation.

The Dock is offering a variety of coupons for customers at different donation levels, but a $10 donation will get customers entered in a grand prize draw of a catered dinner for six on St. Patrick’s Day at The Dock on Princess, complete with dinning on fine furniture, provided by Leon’s Furniture Warehouse and limousine service.

Give Up the Green clovers can also be purchased at BDO Dunwoody, Forbidden Flavours in Brandon, Vanguard Credit Union and the BRHC Foundation.

Shoppers Mall

Shoppers Mall is going to look a lot different in a few short months.

Shoppers Mall manager Kim James said Target is on schedule to open in early May and new stores Dynamite and Charm Diamond Centre (opening in the old McCallum’s Jewellers site) are set to open up in the mall in early July. Smart Set however, will be vacating the mall at the end of their lease.
