Joey's revamped menu offers wider variety

If you find eating out a hard thing to do when eating healthfully, look no further than Joey’s Restaurant in Brandon.

Located at 1212 18th St., the restaurant, famous for its English-style fish and chips, has revamped its menu to include many healthier options for those who prefer something other than seafood on their plates.

Joey’s Restaurant owner and manager Sharleen Mosiondz, who owns the eatery with her husband Jerry Morgan, says the old favourites are still on the menu, like Joey’s famous fish and chips ($12-$13, depending on how many pieces of fish), haddock or cod and chips ($15-$16) and the English favourite mushy peas ($1).

She says the rotisserie chicken has been removed from the menu, as it has from most of the Joey’s restaurants across Canada, but has been replaced with many flavourful varieties of grilled chicken.

A finger-licking number of rib combos have been added like St. Louis style ribs, ($24) and ribs and shrimp ($21). Also a spring mix salad has been added to the menu, so customers can now have a choice of Caesar or spring mix salad with their main dishes.

The fish options come in a variety of ways to suit your tastes and your diet.

“You can eat a lot healthier here now than you could before. Everything is not deep-fried. Our menu is much more up-to-date. You can get your fish in so many ways, grilled, broiled, (etc.),” Mosiondz said.

The menu includes a number of new pasta options too, including the shrimp and lobster sauce fettuccini ($16) and the shrimp or chicken alfredo ($16).

Mosiondz is confident Joey’s Restaurant has the freshest shrimp in town too, with their shrimp coming in frozen in large blocks of ice. “It’s super fresh that way,” she said. It is served in many tantalizing flavours.

The kid’s menu offers a variety of choices for the little ones; for $5.99 kids get their choice of meal, which includes a side dish like fries of veggies, a drink and dessert.

Tuesday is All You Can Eat Fish and Chips night.

Joey’s Restaurant is open from Monday to Saturdays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 12 to 8 p.m. For more information, call 204-729-3700.

Abby Rose and the New Cafe by the Lady of the Lake family

It’s official. Lady of the Lake is moving downtown.

Well, sort of.

Lady of the Lake owner Bridget Shaw’s daughters, Miranda and Kaleigh Stobbe, will be opening their own shop and café perceptively with the help of Shaw and other Lady of the Lake staff sometime in September.

Miranda’s shop, Abby Rose, located at 912 Rosser Ave., will feature “excellent,” quality, up-to-date, seasonal clothing, hats, bags, shoes and jewelry.

The store will purchase the items from customers with “lady bucks,” which can be used on other merchandise or food at Lady of the Lake, the café (which has yet to be named) and Abby Rose.

Customers are asked to drop off their items in a box with their name and phone number at Lady of the Lake.

Kaleigh’s café, located at 908 Rosser Ave., has a capacity of 32 people and feature a juice bar, with Brandon’s first selection of fresh vegetable juice, green juice.

It will also have a variety of fruit smoothies to choose from.

Kaleigh currently serves as the kitchen manager at Lady of the Lake and Miranda does the Lady of the Lake’s website. Shaw said she didn’t know her apples wouldn’t fall far from the tree.

“It’s interesting to look back at what you have taught them. They know there are a fair amount of perks to owning your own business,” Shaw said. “It’s pretty good. I’m very happy we’re going downtown.”

Shaw said they are hoping to open the shop and the café simultaneously at a yet unpicked date in September.

Dollar Tree

Dollar Tree Canada has confirmed they will be opening up one of its large-scale discount stores in Brandon, to be located in the old Home Hardware building at 3000 Victoria Ave.

Danielle Turner, the Western Canada real estate manager for Dollar Tree Canada, says the company has begun the process of hiring for the new Dollar Tree, which will contain more than 1,000 sq. feet of discount products ranging in price from 65 cents to $1.25, with nothing over $1.25.

Dollar Tree will start renovations on the building shortly and plan to open in early November. Dollar Tree already has stores in Winnipeg and is planning to open another in Winkler shortly. Dollar Tree Canada currently has about 135 stores across the country.
