Brandon’s Marlin Travel is losing its longtime business owner.
Marlene Kirton, who has owned the local branch of Marlin Travel, located at 301 18th St., has sold her business to other Marlin Travel franchise owners, the Percy Hunt Group, which will take over operations of the Brandon office as of July 1.
Kirton will move into a senior management position with the Percy Hunt Group, which owns 16 other Marlin Travel locations across three provinces.
"It’s a big change," Kirton said. "As an owner, it was hard after 24 years to make this decision. This office is the office of my dreams."
Marlin Travel in Brandon not only offers travel and vacation services, but has a unique gift store in the upstairs portion of the building called the "Island," which offers a variety of unique gifts and includes the largest selection of Burton Luggage in Canada.
Kirton said the local office will keep the same staff and she will work from home for the Percy Hunt Group.
"I think this location in Brandon is really a flagship opportunity for (the Percy Hunt Group)," Kirton said.

The Bloom Box
A big change for a pair of local flower shop owners is on the way.
Trish and Shaun Fjeldsted, who have owned Academy Florists, located at 535 Princess Ave., for the last four years are dropping the franchise name and becoming The Bloom Box, as of July 1.
The change is a big one for the Fjeldsteds, but a very small one for customers.
"Not much is changing for customers," Trish Fjeldsted said. "Our signs and our van decals are changing, but we are still FTD and teleflora florists. Our services have not changed and we are still here."
The Bloom Box is still able to offer delivery locally, nationally and internationally being a FTD florist.
Fjeldsted said the only change for the customers is the florist’s buying capacity, the ability to purchase products from growers in Canada and other different products that weren’t part of the Academy Florists line.
"This will definitely broaden our horizons. We will still be offering the same standbys year-round, but we will be able to offer better products on the side."

Pirouette Active Wear
It’s swimsuit season again and where is a grown woman to go to find a fashionable swimsuit in her size in Brandon?
Pirouette Active Wear, located at 1005 13th St., offers a varied selection of two-piece swimwear from Australian company Seafolly in Canadian sizes 10-16.
"When I first opened. I carried competitive swimwear because it was harder to find that here in the smaller sizes ... it just kind of grew from there," Pirouette owner Lorinda Abbey said.
Abbey said she sells the line mostly to customers going on a cruise or a hot holiday, but the line of tankinis and bikinis is nice for customers as they can mix and match the pieces.
"I also can special order for customers, even if they have a piece from the last year," Abbey said.
Pirouette carries competitive and adult swimwear, in addition to dancewear, skatewear and gymnastics wear.
Contact Pirouette at 204-728-3072, toll-free at 1-877-838-5321, or visit them online at pirouetteactivewear.ca.
